Being LGBT in Italy, between Europe and the Vatican
In Western Europe, Italy is a country of its own regarding LGBT rights – indeed same sex couples are not granted any rights. Additionally, the Vatican heavily influences the public discussion and affects the agenda of both the conservative parties and the progressive ones. The effect is one feeling like one lives in a “Pope’s Regime”.
Where is this social ‘modernisation’ leading? Is growing up as LGBT in Italy like in Canada? The goals of this workshop will be to present Italian LGBT hot-buttons, scratching the surface of stereotypes of Italian LGBT people and to study the main results of MODI DI (www.modidi.net), the recent national survey on Italian LGBT lifestyle, sexual behaviours, risk factors, HIV/AIDS, family and religion.
MODI DI is run by Arcigay and the National Institute of Health.
